The CA Assembly’s Appropriations Committee today converted Senate Bill 145 into a two-year bill, but did not approve the bill as currently written. Therefore, the bill could be amended as late as September 2020.
“Unfortunately, it is not a surprise that the Appropriations Committee today failed to approve Senate Bill 145,” stated ACSOL Executive Director Janice Bellucci. “We will watch carefully to ensure that if the bill is amended, new language does not harm registrants or their families.”
SB 145 was amended earlier this year in a way that could have authorized cities and counties to either reinstate or adopt new residency restrictions limiting where registrants and their families could live. That amendment was stricken on July 9 during a hearing of the Assembly’s Public Safety Committee after more than 30 additional people, including registrants and their family members, spoke in favor of the newly amended version of SB 145.
Because the Appropriations Committee today failed to approve SB 145, the bill will not move forward for consideration by either the full Assembly or by the Governor. If the bill is not amended, it is expected to remain in the Appropriations Committee’s suspense file.
It’s only because the career politicians want to keep there seats.
